Life is simple, yet the way we think makes it complicated. Mindfulness is one of the easiest way to beat not just stress but also raise awareness. It’s something beyond the mind that something as simple as Mindfulness can produce absolutely stunning results almost instantly. Truly most of the times we are not using the mind, the mind is infact using us. Imagine if your hand was to use you instead of you using your hand at will.
I believe one of the best and easiest ways to learn a skill is learn it from the master. Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life & Exercises and Meditations by Jon Kabat-Zinn is great way to start your journey in a world of peace, joy and stillness if you are starting or simply supplement your daily meditation practice.
Jon Kabat-Zinn is a world renowned mindfulness teacher besides also being a scientist, a writer and also a professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. So learning Mindfulness from him you can be sure you are in good hands.
What’s in the pack
There are a total of 8 tracks consisting of meditations and exercises. 6 tracks are of his workshop and 2 tracks are of as the name suggests Mindfulness Meditation in Daily Life.
Jon is someone who walks his talk. His voice is filled with compassion and kindness. He gives guided intructions on mindful walking and meditation. Included also are Jon’s responses to questions from people who are practising mindfulness. Many questions you may have are answered there. I personally think it’s one of the high points which will enable a deeper understanding to the simple art of mindfulness.
Minfulness is about simplicity. If you are expecting some techno meditative music leading you in meditation this CD isn’t for you. The meditations in the album are as plain and simple like sky, yet profound as Buddha’s wisdom which may leave you with curiosity wondering at the wonder of the mundane blade of glass on the sidewalk.
Interestingly while dropping my son to his playschool today, the daily quote on the school board said “Children find everything in nothing. Men find nothing in everything“. That in a way sums up the expecatation you should have from “Mindfulness in Daily life” to get the most of it.
The Subtle Art of Mindfulness
Mindfulness is subtle in a way and artful. It’s going beyond your mind yet using your mind. It’s making you a spectator yet being able to enjoy life. It simply vaporizes the stress without you even leaving the stress. You wonder where your fears have gone. The thoughts that gave you hell simply lose their power.
I won’t have the words to describe mindfulness to truly do justice yet look at the way Jon leads you there through his words “Picture a mountain of your choice… see the details of its beauty. It’s relationship with the landscape, its profile, the ruggedness at the base, anchored in the base of earth. It’s unmoving qualities….”
Here is another gem from Jon in one of the meditations “…the weather to express itself“. That sums up the beauty of this album, it not just allows you your expression in full bloom but also helps you deepen your understanding of mindfulness.
Here is another gem from the album “…honor the turbluence. Neither denying it. Nor obsessing about it” which help you cultivate mindfulness even in what may have been your greatest fear or obsession. The album helps you cultivate the “freshness of this moment”.
The Last Word
In my opinion the best way to enjoy this album is have an approach of playfulness. Listen to it with “no timeline, no agenda, just here” approach to gain the most from it. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness in Daily life is an absolute recommendation to anyone who wishes to deepen his practice of mindfulness.
